30 MILES OF CRAZY! 79: Little Bit

Time for another 'Tru-ish' tale of Denizens, Bars, Characters of the 'Longest Wickedest Street in America' and Other Low Places. Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#79)

It's Christmas Eve, so here's this week's 30 MILES a little bit early. A feel good story for the time. It's a Christmas miracle (but not really.)

This week: 'Little Bit'... or IT'S QUIET SOMEWHERE ON COLFAX...

'Little Bit' was an actual Colfax character... well before the time I moved here, though I've heard several stories about her (like this one.) The below is utterly true. You can read more about it from the 1995 Westword article about her and her life.

So... Three... Two... One... Musical Accompaniment!.... and GO!

30 MILES OF CRAZY! CIRCUS 74.5: Curse These Vexatious Rickets!

New 30 MILES OF CRAZY! CIRCUS! (74.5)

"And that thoroughfare, born beneath the mountainous mountains of rocky peaks so high, seeing as it shall victual to prospectors, explorers, and men of chance, and whereas said men, in their sparse moments of recess and requiescence, require relief of an immediate and carnal conformation, let Colfax Way be a den of avarice, a cauldron of covetousness, a peccadillo wharf in a sea-storm of morality. Let not a man walk Colfax Way and wonder, 'Where shall I deposit my virility this eve, where may I encounter mine intoxicant?' for he shall find all he seeks on Colfax. Curse these vexatious rickets!"
 - Schuyler Colfax (March 23, 1823 – January 13, 1885, Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, and Colfax Avenue's namesake) from his 1878 autobiography, Cursed Rickets

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 71: Ulalume

Time for another 'Tru-ish' tale of Denizens, Bars, Characters of the 'Longest Wickedest Street in America' and Other Low Places. Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#71)

This week! The first new 30 MILES that is not in the original collection (which compiles 30MOC #1-70 and is still on sale!) So because of this (and the fact that it's Halloween), I thought I would do something different, try an experiment, and adapt one of my favorite Edgar Allan Poe poems. Many people rush straight to Poe's 'Raven', but I have always found 'Ulalume' a much better choice. Some people (usually a smaller fellow towards the back with an oddly loud whiny voice who somehow always smells of goats) may complain "But, KARL... this has nothing to do with the city or bars or drinking!!!!"  Tough. This is my comic and I get to make up the rules.

So... here is 'Ulalume'... or 'A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER'  Also head up, this week's comic is THREE pages (it's a long poem.)

Three... Two... One... Musical Accompaniment! (and I really recommend you listen to this one as you read the comic).... and GO!

Happy Halloween!

So, here it is... my first 30 MILES Outtake, along with the photo I took of that same corner in North Beach (with the Columbus Tower and TransAmerica Pyramid in the background) to mimic this comic. Groovy.

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 66: Shenanigans

Time for another 'Tru-ish' tale of Colfax, the Mile High City, and Other Low Places. Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#66)

This week: 'Shenanigans!' ... or "I'M HIGHLY SKEPTICAL AND CANNOT MAKE ANY CLAIMS ON THE TRUTHINESS OF THIS ONE'

People tell me stories in bars all the time. This week's 30 MILES is no different. I've heard it said that 'TRUTH' (and that's Truth all in capitals) is a a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the actual truth. That may be some wise saying... or I may have heard it in some old trashy 'Star Trek' episode where the set wobbled.
I have my own views, but always leave it up to the reader to to decided on the veracity of this one.

So... Three... Two... One... Musical Accompaniment! .... and GO!

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 59: The Funeral of CGK, Part 4

Friday! Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#59) with Part 4 (of 6) of 'On the Road - Philadelphia!'
“Harsh and beautiful. Tell Karl thank you. After 5 hospice referrals this week, I need this series to keep my humanity” - Theresa A. (Geriatirician & Palliative Care Doctor)
Once again... please note that this week's comic is THREE pages! I'm getting to the end of this story, pulling out all the stops, and tying everything up. So...

Many years ago...

“I think you should look normal. I mean, get a haircut, get rid of all the black, and go utterly straight,” my father turned and said to me over the blare of my headphones as we drove down Ashton Street.

“What the hell do you mean?”, I replied. I was 16 years old, had my hair in the standard devil-lock down passed my chin, had my required black Misfits shirt, and my battered skateboard over my knees. My father was driving us home, as I was never that great at skating.

“Go straight. Full on. Short hair, collared shirt, tie...  No one will expect it.” he said with the fake smile of someone trying to con you. “Being utterly normal looking is way more punk rock than looking like all the rest of your friends.”

Like most things my father said at the time, I knew that he was full of shit.

“I get enough of 'looking normal' at Catholic School”, I replied, hating that I still had another year or so to go before graduation.

“I tell you, you’d look sharp!”, my father said continuing to press the point. “Get a really nicely cut suit. I used to get mine at Krass Brothers down on South Street.” Like Pavlov’s dog and most of the times during my youth, I simply rolled my eyes once again. My father would never understand. I turned up the volume a bit more on my Walkman and stared at the bland uniform row homes drift by.

It took another 16 years for me to wise up, clean up, and start wearing suits regularly. To start dressing nice and looking sharp. Only then, on visits back to the family, did he wonder aloud why I had to dress up all the time.

OTHER THINGS

If you click over there you may have noticed the new fancy website (Many thanks to Andy D and All Trades Design). You can now order copies of the new 30 MILES Collection online: http://karlchristiankrumpholz.com/shop/

Also, Thanks to Daniel E and Comics Bulletin for a great review of the collection!

"Though 30 Miles of Crazy has, as its subtitle, “True-ish tales of derelicts, bars, and denizens of other low places,” the book is a love story, really. It documents Krumpholz's love of his town, his friends, his lover, and, above all else, other people. Certainly there are moments in this book that focus on the raw, fucked up, and desperate aspects of humanity, but Krumpholz's portrayal of everyone and everything, while not exactly reverential, is suffused with understanding and affection.

It's also pretty fucking funny in parts."

... and now.... on to THE FUNERAL OF CGK, Part 4... The funeral is finally over. K and I flee into the city and to a small hole in the wall off Broad Street that I spent way too many nights at 15+ years ago when I still lived in Downtown Philadelphia. Yes... though there is no sign (but murals all around), the locals know it as the great Dirty Franks.

Like all the previous posts in this series, the musical accompaniment will be one of his favorite songs. My father was the one that pointed me in the direction of this artist and started on this particular road. So with that... three... two... one... Musical Accompaniment... and GO!

Next week... the Epilogue.

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 58.5: Yuengling

30 MILES OF CRAZY! CIRCUS!: On The Road: Philadelphia continues.

Here's a sneak peak from this Friday's 30 MILES OF CRAZY, where the funeral is (almost) over in Philadelphia, we're at a classic bar off Broad Street, and we get back to drinking one of the area's best beers (and Oldest Brewery in America): Yuengling.

Growing up in the area, I never thought it odd to go into a bar, order a 'Lager' (or a 'Porter'), and you would always get a Yuengling product. Until years (and living in several other cities) later when K pointed it out, it never even occurred to me that ordering a beer by style (rather than by name) was really... quite odd. However, that's always the way it was (and still is since my last trip there) with Yuengling in the Delaware Valley. It's still one of the things I really miss from that area (though I've heard it's beers have made it's way up to Massachusetts, where we'll be next week! There may just be a Yuengling/Narragansett drink off...)

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 58: The Funeral of CGK, Part 3

BOOM! Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#58) with Part 3 (of 6) of 'On The Road - Philadelphia.

This week continues with Part 3 of 'The FUNERAL OF CGK'. Yes, this week... children play with coffins. You all knew it was going to come to this.

Again, please note that this comic is TWO pages. Not only am I doing my first multiple chaptered continued storyline, but I'm doing in numerous paged installments. ONWARD AND TO THE FUTURE!!!
Like last week, the musical accompaniment will be one of my father's favorite songs. So, three... two... musical accompaniment... and GO!

30 MILES OF CRAZY! 57: The Funeral of CGK, Part 2

Friday! Time for a new 30 MILES OF CRAZY! (#57)

Once again it's time to leave the charmingly grim and gritty Colfax Avenue (fun for kids of all ages. Just make sure you got your shots) and the Mile High City for the cheesesteak-clogged arteries of Broad Street (and place I once lived for far too long), Philadelphia. With it's water ice, Mummers, and 'Bullies' (1970's Flyers' joke!) for Part 2 (of 6) of 'On The Road - Philadelphia'.

Again (like most of the comics in this series), please note that this comic is TWO pages. Seriously, when I've done two page stories in the past (like 30MoC #31), people have approached me in bars commenting that they really didn't get the story... cause they never scrolled down further to read the next page. So, as a PSA, please scroll down and read the second page.

... and yes, we are still at the funeral. Trust me. It was a weird day. Also ... yes, these were all things actually said to me. And lastly.... yes, my name was almost  'Hans' (and my uncle still calls me that, refusing to use my given name.) Can't decide if I dodged a bullet or not with that name.

So, let's get started with THE FUNERAL OF CGK, Part 2.

Like last week, (no sarcasm) the musical accompaniment will be one of my father's favorite songs. So, three... two... musical accompaniment... and GO!

Share and Enjoy!
